Curly Girl Method: Summer 2012

So for the summer of 2012, I’m trying the Curly Girl Method defined by Lorraine Massey. Here’s the gist of it from Naturally Curly:

  1. Either eliminate or seriously limit the use of shampoos with sulfates. Why? Most commercial shampoos contain surfactants that are too harsh for our hair and tend to rob our hair of moisture.
  2. Use a clear gel to help keep frizz away.
  3. Handle the hair in a very gentle manner.
Sounds simple right? I think the biggest challenge for me is the age old “be gentle” mantra for curly hair. Especially with my kinks & coils, detangling can be unruly and down right frustrating at times. Granted, I acknowledge my biggest culprits is failing to section my hair at night and regular detangling sessions but I digress. So far I’ve been using the Curly Girl Method for 2 days now with wash & gos (gasp). A month ago a wash and go would have been a death sentence on my hair but with a proper trim and regularly finger detangling it actually has not been as much of a challenge as I thought, and I’ve read it gets easier. After a ton of Google and Forum research on CurlyNikki (along with a personal recommendation from my sister who has lovely curls), I’m using Tresemme Naturals Moisture Conditioner with Aloe Vera and Avocado as my co-wash and that’s pretty much it. I have Eco- Styler Gel I may use from time to time on my edges/fly-aways and Coconut Oil on my ends only but that’s all I think I’ll need.  Wish me luck! I have tons of shrinkage that I am working with so I may try something for that because my stretched hair is easier to detangle.

What I’m Up To…

Anyone who has checked my pinterest recently has seen my obsession with all things design. My dream – to build a cozy, well-designed space fit for a not so tidy couple. More than design ideas, I’ve been searching for intuitive storage solutions that make living an uncluttered life effortless. Our place is a 1 br den of about 900 sq ft (which funny enough is a good size by DC standards) but it is not without its challenges..ahem.. opportunities to make it just right for the two of us. So far the most effective design source I have been using are apartment therapy and ikea. Apartment Therapy is great because it provides tons and tons of inspiration and practical ideas for defining spaces and hacking (seemingly) useless goods into great pieces all while doing so for small homes. On the other hand, my good ole’ college friend Ikea has served me well for providing inexpensive  furniture, design concepts, and inspiration to give me a ready made home on budget. Check out a few of my favorite spaces from Pinterest.

This room just feels cozy to me.Though the sofa looks like it is prettier than it feels,

I could have some really cozy rainy nights in this room.

I love the monochromatic theme of blues for this room.

I have an affinity for mint green and I love the black/white prints.

Musings from On the Job Hunt

Source: Uploaded via Clare on Pinterest

So, I’ll spare you the dramatic saga of the past few weeks  working for a small business in government contracting, but suffice to say I’m on the job hunt to be safe. I have been casually looking for the past 4 months but nothing really strikes me. Just kinda eh, “I can do that” or “I can try to make that work”, but nothing is perfect. However, recent lay-offs at work have left me more motivated to, as they say, “settle”. I do not like that word (it reminds of dating a less than stellar match)  but it is a practical way of expressing  acknowledging this is not the ideal set-up and that’s okay for now.  Thing is not that where I am now is perfect so the idea of well…moving on to something less perfect than my less than perfect situation is not cool. But yet, I’m still optimistic and grateful because:

  • Everything runs its course. I’ve been ready to leave my current job for awhile so its kinda good timing.
  • A new job usually equals new growth/opportunities to learn something new.
  • Though the drama at work right now is laughable, shaking things up in life keeps it interesting.
  • Despite my lack of enthusiasm about the positions I’m currently finding, there has got to be a diamond in the rough I’ll find eventually (right?)
  • Interviewing is a learning experience.  As irritating as it can be to have to justify yourself,  qualifications, personality, etc, it’s also an opportunity to evaluate what you want and who you are as much as they evaluate you.

Anyone else on the perpetual job search? My father always said its good to search for new opportunities because its like checking in on where you are to see if you have outgrown it.
